Meet Ayghir Aybalikh, one of our PhD students

Who are you?
My name is Ayghir Aybalikh from China and I have been a PhD student at the University of Gothenburg since September, 2019.

Can you tell us a little bit about your project?
The project Transfers to fossil-fueled traffic types - today's and future's competitive surfaces aims to contribute to the transfer of goods from all-road transport mode to more energy efficient modes (e.g. rail, shipping modes and intermodal transport) by analyzing the transport chains from different levels, e.g., actor, organization, and industry levels, and by identifying measures and gaps which can be used to facilitate competition of those energy efficient modes against the road transport. To begin with, we need to evaluate how competition is formed, constructed and organized on different transport chains and transport markets including the roles of freight forwarders and government agencies as important actors.

How do you expect the project to contribute to a fossil-free freight transport system?
The project focuses on competitive surfaces among different transport modes and identifying factors that affect the competitiveness of specific modes for given transport market segments. This will show how those competitive surfaces emerged and formed under what circumstances by meeting the customers’ demands, which can be useful for transport companies to design more competitive solutions and increase their respective competitiveness against the road transport. This can be of great importance for reducing the negative climate impacts and externalities caused by transport overall by achieving modal shifts from road to more energy efficient transport.

What are your expectations for Triple F as a program?
I would like Triple F to further broaden collaboration among researchers, business communities and public sectors, facilitate knowledge-building based on the future fossil-free freight orientation, and play its important role as a platform of information- and knowledge-sharing in a long term. In this way, the society and businesses could benefit in parallel with the sustainable development, not only in Sweden but also on international level.

What difference can it be for both you as an individual and your project to be part of Triple F?
Triple F is a network platform where innovative solutions to freight transport systems in Sweden and operational competence to businesses are created and shared, thus the project- and challenge-driven orientations of such network can be of great help to me as an individual to expand my social network and connect with other colleagues with the same goals and ambitions. And it can also help my project to cover knowledge on different disciplines so that a holistic view and a systematic approach can be built when exploring competitive surfaces in all transport modes, and organizing future competition among more energy efficient ones.

Do you think that the transport system of the future will be transferred to fossil-free or fossil-efficient modes of transport?
We are living in a time of transition to a fossil-free transport system and there is a lot of interesting projects going on at the moment. It might take time to be completely fossil-free but I firmly believe that the transport system of the future will be more energy efficient.
